Recently, interest in some sectors has been increasing due to both the production of electric vehicles, the increase in interest in these vehicles and the abundance in traffic. Battery manufacturers are at the forefront of these sectors. Batteries, which are the most costly part for electric vehicles, are produced by the world's largest companies and offered to the automotive industry.

As of 2022, electric vehicles, which have made great progress in their market share, have a share of 15 percent. This share will continue to be a big part of our lives by getting bigger. With the increase in oil prices in the world, the demand for electric vehicles continues unabated. New battery technologies and battery production have become very important. Every development that can provide advantages to producers and consumers is important and the investment tendency in this field is increasing significantly.

Let's take a look at the leading companies in the electric vehicle battery manufacturing sector;

-CATL
It is a battery manufacturer and technology company originating in China. It is currently the world's largest manufacturer of LFP cathode batteries. Founded in 2011, this company produces lithium-ion batteries and energy storage systems for electric vehicles. It supplies the world's giant companies in the automotive industry. Tesla, Mercedes, BMW, Ford and Toyota are the most well known of them. According to 2021 data, its market share is 32.6 percent, making the company the world's largest manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries. In 2021, it realized 96.7 GWh of the 296.8 GWh global production. Compared to the previous year, it increased its production by 167.5 percent.

Apart from its factories in China, CATL has a factory under construction in Germany. It has been announced by the company in the past months that a new factory will be established in Hungary with a large investment. It is thought that this investment will be 7.5 billion dollars. It is also known that they are considering establishing production facilities in the USA and Mexico. The company, which is the pioneer of new technologies in the battery industry, is expected to launch a new battery in 2023. It is expected that the new battery will have more advantageous aspects than the old ones and will come with new solutions.

-LG Energy Solutions
It is the company of the South Korean electronics giant LG. LG started R&D studies for lithium-ion batteries in 1992. Formerly LG Chem (now LG Energy Solutions) its activities in the battery field officially became a separate company in the last month of 2020. It went public in the first month of this year and had the largest IPO ever in South Korea. In total, it received a demand of 10.8 billion dollars.

It has production facilities in America, China, South Korea, Poland and Indonesia. Serial production started in 1999. It supplied batteries to GM's Volt model, one of the first mass-produced electric vehicles, and thus made a serious breakthrough in the sector. The company currently supplies batteries to vehicle manufacturers such as GM, Ford, Audi, Renault and Volvo. Finally, LG, which announced that it will establish a production facility in the USA in partnership with Honda, announced that it will be an investment of approximately 4.4 billion dollars.

-BYD
Founded in 1995, BYD is owned by Chinese entrepreneur Wang Chuanfu. One of the partners of the company is Berkshire Hathaway Holding. The company, which produces automobiles, batteries and electronic goods, has more than 25 years of experience in battery systems. About twenty thousand engineers are working in the battery field only within the scope of R&D. Holding many patents, the company entered the automotive industry in 2003 and is China's top electric vehicle seller. It also operates in Europe and America. BYD company plays an important role in the sector due to its experience and manufacturing in both the battery and automotive sectors.

The company, which continues its activities with its facilities located in 33 different places, continues its investments in the new period. Last August, it announced that it will establish a 30 GWh capacity battery factory and lithium carbonate production facility with an investment of 4.2 billion dollars in Yichun, which is known as the “Lithium Capital of Asia”. It started to supply the latest blade-shaped long thin design LFP battery cells to Tesla. Tesla used to buy these battery cells, which will be realized in the Berlin factory, from the CATL company.

-Panasonic Energy
It is a subsidiary of the Japanese giant Panasonic. It produces dry batteries and electric vehicle batteries. It is the world's fourth largest company producing batteries for electric vehicles. It mostly supplies Tesla. A joint venture was established with Toyota in 2020. The company announced in July this year that it will establish a battery factory in Kansas with an investment of 4 billion dollars.

-SK Ten
SK On currently has a production capacity of 13.2 GWh. According to 2021 data, it is the world's fifth largest supplier of electric vehicle batteries. The company includes giant companies such as Ford, Volkswagen, Mercedes, Kia and Hyundai. It has seven factories in Europe, China and America. The two new facilities planned to be operational in 2024 will be one in Hungary and the other in China. Last June, it was announced that a joint production facility with Ford Otosan would be established in our country.

-Samsung SDI
Founded in 1970, the company manufactures rechargeable batteries for IT devices and energy storage system applications. It continues to produce various materials in semiconductors and image transmission systems. The headquarters of the company is located in South Korea. Samsung SDI has a presence in 27 different locations around the world with its R&D centers, production centers and sales bases.

In May 2022, it signed an agreement with the automotive giant "Stellantis" to establish a joint venture. This facility, which is expected to exceed 2.5 billion dollars, is expected to start production in the first quarter of 2025. This facility, which will produce battery cells and modules for electric vehicles, will have a capacity of 23 GWh in the first place. It is planned to increase this capacity to 33 GWh in the coming years.

   

-CALB
It is a state-owned company located in China. It designs lithium-ion batteries and power systems for electric vehicles, energy storage, telecommunications, mining equipment and rail transport. It mostly manufactures LFP and NMC batteries and supplies the automotive industry. Gelly supplies domestic electric vehicle manufacturers such as XPENG Motor, Leapmotor, Changan and GAC Toyota.

Annual generation capacity is expected to exceed 500 GWh by 2025. Especially since 2018, thanks to its strategic transformation goal, it gained a very good momentum in four years and became one of the largest battery manufacturers in the world. The company, which made its initial public offering on the Hong Kong stock market in the past months, has raised approximately $1.3 billion in investments. It has been announced that this collected investment will be used for the new production facilities to be established.

-Gotion High-Tech
It is a Chinese battery manufacturer. The company develops, manufactures and sells lithium batteries for electric vehicles. The company as the main products; lithium iron phosphate batteries, prismatic battery cells, battery management systems and energy storage batteries. 26.5 percent of the company belongs to Volkswagen. The produced LFP batteries are given to various electric vehicle manufacturers such as Volkswagen and Tata Group. The company plans to establish a production center in Michigan, USA, with an investment of approximately 3.5 billion dollars, in order to increase its R&D and production capacity.

-SVOLT
It is a subsidiary of the Chinese automaker Great Wall Motors (GWM). It develops and manufactures lithium-ion batteries and energy storage systems for electric vehicles. Its headquarters in Europe is located in Germany. Announcing that it will make a new investment, the company also stated that it has determined a budget of approximately 2 billion euros for this investment. The company aims to increase its annual production capacity to 600 GWh by 2025. Approximately 90 percent of the batteries produced by the company at its installed capacity are supplied to GWM. Also among its customers are Geely, Dongfeng Motor, Hozon Auto and Leapmotor.

-EVE Energy
EVE Energy is a China-based company that deals with the development, manufacture and distribution of battery products. It deals with lithium-ion batteries and other lithium-based battery solutions. The company ranks eighth among battery manufacturers in China with a market share of 2.3 percent. The company supplies its batteries to BMW, Daimler, Hyundai, Jaguar, Land Rover and XPENG. As of now, all production facilities are located in China. The company, which will build two production facilities in Europe and Southeast Asia, will have its production base in Europe in Debrecen, Hungary.

-Farasis
It is a Chinese company engaged in the research, development, manufacture and sale of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles. There are also products used in electric motorcycles. The company made its initial public offering in 2020. It saw a $5 billion valuation in that offering, and Mercedes has become the company's strategic partner with a 3 percent stake. The company's annual capacity is currently 21 GWh.

Farasis company is the battery partner of our domestic electric car Togg. Siro Energy, which was established in partnership with Togg and Farasis for battery modules and packages to be produced in Turkey, is currently building a factory with an annual production capacity of 20 GWh in Gemlik.

-Northvolt
It is a company founded by former Tesla employees Peter Carlsson and Paolo Cerruti. With financial support from European customers such as the European Investment Bank, Volkswagen, Volvo, Ikea, BMW and Scania, the company began construction of its first battery cell factory in Sweden in 2020. Battery cell production started in this factory, which was completed last year. The company became the first European company to manufacture battery cells in Europe. It aims to have an annual production capacity of 150 GWh by 2030. Apart from the three factories to be built in Sweden and Germany, it is planned to establish a cathode production facility and a battery recycling facility. Currently, the company has $55 billion in orders from automakers such as BMW, Scania, Volvo and Volkswagen.
